13-course swan neck lute by Lars Jonsson after Martin
Hoffman made in 1994. Deep body with a full, sweet
tone. Diapasons mainly of gut with nylgut octaves.
It shows some small signs of wear from normal use but
is in otherwise great shape and features excellent
craftsmanship in its construction. Comes with a
sturdy hardshell case. Can email more pics and some
MP3 files of this instrument. $3000 USD.

8 co. Renaissance lute by Grant Tomlinson 1990. Venere (C 36) model. 66.5 cm

strings. Lovely low action [ca. 2.85 mm ( f'board to bottom of string) @ 8th

room for a new 13 co baroque instr. See

This is a 7-course 11-rib Renaissance style apparently after Hans Frei. It was built in Europe in 1937 for a member of the French royal family, according to the music store dealer. My folks bought it in late 1972, and had it re-strung sometime in the early 1990s. It has not been played at least since then. The back is figured maple, and the string length is 62cm. Tied frets.
There is no damage or wear marks. Custom hard case included. Prefer to show locally (South San Francisco Bay/Monterey Bay area, California). More photos available.

Antique German lute guitar for sale. 6 strings. The previous owner
said it was made in 1870s. I have also had luthiers tell me that the
wood was over 100 years at least. Spruce top, yew bowl. Maker:
Goldklang? The instrument is mostly original. I believe the
fretboard was added for extra height before I purchased it. The tuning
keys were replaced by me, but originals are still intact, one key on
original will not turn. Small cracks have been repaired on the face
and back, (see pics), but these are only due to the age of the
instrument. Everything else is original. Very playable. low action.
Nice sound.

Eight-course lute after Zuane Hieber (Venezia - 1587), built by
Giuseppe Tumiati in 2001. String length 60 cm; body of 13 ribs in
Curly Maple, transparent red natural varnish; soundboard in Spruce
(Val di Fiemme, Italy); fingerboard and back of the neck in Ebony.
This lute is in great condition (only a minor winter crack that has
been fixed, and that doesn't affect the sound at all). Great action
and beautiful and clear tone. Stephen Stubbs gave a master class on
it in Montreal (since he didn't have his instrument); he was really
pleased with it. I'm sorry to let it go since it has served me well
over the years. Comes with a fit case made by Fabio Zontini. New
intrument from maker 3900.00 EUR (around $5340.00). Letting it go for

Esteemed friends, I am selling a six course vihuela in E, made by Lourdes
Uncilla in November, 2006;
The wood used is of the first quality and of oldness guaranteed: German
pine - fir for the top, with carved rosette and parchment. The box (ribs
and bottom) is of sycamore - maple. The neck of cedar, lacquer in black
and the diapason in ebony, as well as the pegs (that they allow to play
in tune easily) The finish of the instrument is first
quality. The vihuela is in mint condition.

13 course Baroque Lute by Martin De Witte, 1999 Vlissingen. Holland. Maple Back. String Length 69/74cm. Price 4700 EUR
This is a very well set up baroque lute in perfect condition. We used
it for our projects and recordings. Very optimal action, fingerboard
profile is really nice. Checked it with all types of strings also with different
types of gut settings (Gamut, Kuerschner).
Extreemly stable and solid concert professional instrument. Have gone through all
weather changes and hold in high humidity as well as dry winter. No problems
like cracks or losen bars in any climate situation. Instruments come with hard
made to measure solid cases.
We used this baroque lutes for our duo and would like to sell it since we
decided to switch for two equal istruments of the same make and material.
Only financial reasons make us sell the lutes. We cant afford four baroque
lutes although we'd love to !!! It would be nice to see them in good and caring hands:)
Please feel free to ask for more information.

Lute for sale by Lawrence K Brown, 6 course, built in1980, after Hans Frei.
The top is very finely grained European spruce, the fingerboard of ebony,
the pegs of rosewood. The bridge is pearwood. There are nine cherry staves
on the back.
Condition is excellent, there is some minor grain rising near the bridge
which in no way affects the sound. The action is low, there are no cracks or
loose braces. The soundboard is not dished and is excellent quality. The
tone is first rate. The mensure is 543 mm so it is considered an "A" lute,
though currently in G=440. The lute would sound well also at "high pitch."
Needs new strings.
A lute from Lawrence Brown of the type would currently cost a minimum of
$2000 including a plywood case. Due to the exceptional tone of the
instrument, I am requesting $1450 .

7 Course Renaissance Bass Lute By Malcolm Prior.
Dear Fellow Lute Players. This is an extraordinary instrument. This is a hardship sale, and I am unhappy about not
being able to afford to keep it. The instrument is just over a year old and has not been played in concert.
It is unblemished, and a masterpiece. The price is
indeed a bargain for an instrument of this size and caliber.
7 Course Renaissance Bass Lute After Venere 78cm String Length, 2005. Currently in D tuning, but could easily be strung for E or C.
Built by Master Lute Maker MALCOLM PRIOR of England.
Strung all in Gut except for the top string currently in Nylgut.
19 Ribs of gorgeous shaded yew wood.
Ebony veneered neck and pegbox.
Pegs turn as smoothly and accurately as electric guitars tuning machines. The best peg action I have EVER experienced in a Lute.
Top of exquisite quality European Spruce.
Plush Lined Custom Kingham Hard Shell Case made specifically for this Lute.
Sound quality is superb; caverous, reasonant, and clear.
Playability is "like Butter" works great as a solo instrument.

Made by Robert Russell, the acclaimed guitar maker from Bristol in 1983,
this is a 13 -course baroque lute with separate peg board, in the
theorbo style. It has 24 strings tuned to a Dm chord with the last 8
pairs a descending octave , in the manner of S.L. Weiss and his other
German Contemporaries. The smaller string length is 70 whilst the longer
strings have a string length of a little over 90.
It is in excellent condition and the only reason for sale is that
quite simply I don't have the time to play it anymore.
Please consult the photos to see its exact appearance.
It does not come in a hard case, but be assured that any postal
arrangements can be made (paid for by the buyer of course) which will
ensure that it arrives at its destination unharmed and in pristine
condition.
I also have multiple amounts of music (some original, some photocopied)
, for which separate monetary arrangements can be made should the buyer
of the instrument be interested

8ch renaissance lute 63cm, eleven ribs of birdseyed maple with flattened
back, built in 1989 by Klaus Jacobsen after Italian models - elegant
almond shaped, between Frei and Laux Maler - exactly the same series on
which PO'D. recorded Dowland vol 4 &5 , and Paul Beier his Terzi CD.
Exceptionnal brightness, flexibility and playability even in high
positions (Molinaro...) Originally intended for Elizabethan and late
Italian Renaissance music, this lute also works very well for the
early 6ch and vihuela repertoire.
A 15 year-long companion, quite as new in its Kingham case, 4000 Euros.

Theorbo: 14-course, 79/140 cm, by Pascal Goldschmidt, 1992; 29 yew ribs with
dark spacers; instrument has a full sound which works well with singers and
has enough punch for larger groups; it has a soundboard crack which opens in
the winter and closes in the summer but has remained otherwise unchanged for
7 years; there is a nice ding in the binding but the instrument is otherwise
in excellent shape. With attractive wooden case, $3500.

No need to be truly "authentic"
Lutes kits would also work, as long as they don't need a lot of work. (i am
decent with building things)
i play guitar and keyboards and just wanted a new instrument to play.

I am looking for a CHEAP 8 to 10 course Lute of at least student quality. a case would also help.
Mail to wag2001@hotmail.com if you have any offers or questions.
I live in the United States.
I am a guitar player and enthusiast of Medieval and Renaissance instruments and am slowly building a small collection of Intruments I play. So far I play trumpet, baritone, tuba, euphonium, clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar, ocarina, and have gotten bored with most of them. I need something different to play.
The quality can be stated in a few words: Playable, structurally sound, and stringed.

I'm writing to ask that everyone be on the lookout for a baroque guitar (5
courses) belonging to Lucas Harris in NY.
It was left accidently on the Long Island Rail Road and was taken by someone
on the train.
It has snakewood back and sides, a red and white rose with the center part
missing so you can actually see the label, which says Ivo Romano 1996, I
believe. It has a vaulted back.

How to post an ad
-
Send your postings for lutes for sale, or lutes wanted, to
wbc@cs.dartmouth.edu and be sure to include your address (including
country) and phone number.
You also must include an e-mail address where I can reach you.
Please send your ad in plain text format, not in html format!
I generally do not reply to you unless I need more information
but
I try and insert and delete ads as soon as I get them.
I will delete the ads after roughly one year.
-
If you send pictures, try and crop them close to the instrument so people don't
have to wait to download extra picture that they don't need.
A 200,000 byte picture will take over thirty seconds to download
on a modem connection!
Be sure the pictures are in focus. Take a few moments to check
in detail. Look at what is in the background of the picture too!
It helps if the
names of the pictures don't have any spaces in them. Use
"baroque-lute.jpg" or "baroqueLute.jpg" instead of "baroque lute.jpg".
If you take a close up picture of the rosette be sure that it is in focus.
-
If you are not writing in english, please either use html characters
for accents ( as é for é) or spell it out ( o with " over it, ö )
or use tex symbols ( \'a, á ) as my word processor does not
recognise accents. Since I post these ads in my very hard to
come by free moments, it would help me if you send the ad as
"text/plain" format. If I can't read your ad I will ask you
to re-submit it.
-
If you want to change something, please send me the changes, not the whole ad.
If you say "change the price from 4500 to 4200" or "add a line
that says ..." I can quickly make the change. If you send me
a new ad I have to look through the new and old versions to find
the differences, and I may miss something. If I already have the pictures
please don't send them again!
-
I have a very hard time decoding Microsoft Word documents - please send your ad as plain text!
-
Please type out the monitary units, as in "yen", "krone", "euro",
or "dollars" as my computer can't read the special symbols that many
people use for money. If you type in the characters ¥
you will get a ¥, and the characters € will
print €. The & (ampersand) and ; (semicolon) are
required. ( if your are british £ or £ {include the semicolon} will produce the £ sign.)
-
I use spam filters, if you message looks a lot like spam (html format,
all capital letters, etc) I may not get it. If the ad doesn't show up try sending
it again using plain text, lowercase letters, and a Subject that says
"lute for sale" clearly.
-
If you are a professional builder you may lists lutes that you currently
have on hand for immediate sale. Please tell me when the instrument
is sold.
-
This service is free, but if you feel grateful to me for having
found or sold your lute, you can send a
contribution to
Wayne Cripps, 6211 Sudikoff Lab., Hanover, N.H. 03755 USA.
Please make checks payable to "Wayne Cripps", as the bank gets
upset when I try to cash checks made out to "string fund."
Foreign currencies (cash, not checks) are gladly accepted.
(I seem to be collecting euros now.)
-
Send any questions about the instruments listed here directly
to the owners. In some cases, the owners do not have e-mail and
you will have to use the phone or even write to them!
-
Please be sure to tell me if you do not want me to list your complete name and
address information.
It is helpful if people know what country and state the instrument
is in, but it might be safer to omit your street address.
You should check your ad once I have inserted it.
You might want to consider opening a special email account
for selling your lute, as you will get mail from Nigerian
criminals. It may take a year to sell your lute, and you may
be getting several Nigerian Scam messages a day!
Warning! the Nigerian Fraud has hit the lute world!
Criminals from Nigeria are contacting people who advertise on this list,
asking to buy a lute with a check for thousands of dollars over
the price of the
lute and have the seller wire the remaining money to Nigeria.
Don't do it - the check will be forged and will bounce -
this is a way to steal your money! They all seem to know about this
"Lutes for Sale" list and they will contact you.
See http://home.rica.net/alphae/419coal/
and
see http://www.secretservice.gov/alert419.shtml/
You may want to get yourself a temporary email address to use just for
selling your lute, so that your regular email is not filled with
messages from people running this scam.
Here are some signs of fraud:
What are the two happiest days in a lute owner's life?
The day he buys his lute, and the day that he sells it!
