Interactive Storytelling

Interactive narrative is a field in which storytelling, visual imagery and audience interaction meet. Even though its roots can be traced back hundreds of years, interactive storytelling is still being developed as an art form. Many types of digital media rely on interactive storytelling: computer and video games, the internet, interface design and artificial intelligence. This course will look at these and ask whether these are truly storytelling and how effective the interactivity is. We will look at interactive story structure and how it compares traditional (linear) narrative structure. Classroom exercises will be given to help develop a set of tools that are effective for interactivity. Students will also play and communicate throughout the quarter in a MUD (Multi-User Dialogue) space. The final paper will be the development of a group interactive story script to be presented in class.
