The Market in Funchal

In the center of town is the big market building, bustling with stalls for people selling flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish, and a few odds and ends (baskets, leather goods, tourist items, etc).

The fish market

A separate section was the fish market, with a dozen vendors ready to chop off a tuna steak, filet an "espada" (black scabbard fish, a local specialty), or scoop up a kilo of limpets.  A pungent, but fascinating place.

These guys were selling (right) tuna, limpets, octopus.
