Bangalore, August 2007
Pam and I went to Bangalore, India, for a week in August 2007.
I was speaking at Intel, Infosys, Microsoft, and IISC,
and we were scouting the city in advance of our plans to live in Bangalore for a 2008-09 sabbatical.
Saturday August 18 - Friday August 24, 2007:
- Saturday pictures
- Sunday pictures and movies:
- An autorickshaw ride (1) through the city, past one of the busy market areas.
- An autorickshaw ride (2); see the inside of this three-wheeled taxi based on a motorcycle engine.
- An autorickshaw ride (3) through the city; here we pass by some roadside slums.
- Fruit bats in the park. There were thousands of fruit bats, very noisy, in the Bull Temple park. You can't see them in this lo-res movie, but you can hear them!
- A beggar. A young girl, perhaps 12, carried a child, perhaps 18 months, and followed me throughout our walk in the park. In this movie you don't see her--- I didn't feel right filming her--- but I left the movie running and you can hear her saying "sir... please sir... mother father no sir..." and the little baby mimicking those sounds. Very sad.
There is some wind noise in the taxi-ride movies.
Keep in mind that these rides were on Sunday,
when the traffic was light.
On weekdays the traffic is jammed,
and there are perpetual horns honking and beeping.
- Monday-Thursday, a few pictures
- Friday pictures
and two movies:
an autorickshaw ride, and
the looms of the Silk Factory.
The silk movie gives a good sense of the looms,
but doesn't begin to share the incredible din in that small room.
- Canadian International School
pictures
and a movie that includes a glance
into the second-grade classrooms.
