The digital modeling course I took with Professor Lorie Loeb over sophomore fall significantly helped me over winter term at my internship on the set of Snitch, a feature film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Susan Sarandon as well as at an internship in New York City at the corporate headquarters of NBC. Although I did not use Maya for either internship, the skills of geometry interpretation, critical and logical thinking, as well as attention to detail and presentation prepared me immensely for the work I did in animation's parent business.

Native American student Jason Curley '13, a Navajo/Diné from Arizona, has one of his hand-woven rugs in the Native American Art at Dartmouth exhibit, on display through March 11 at Dartmouth's Hood Museum of Art. A Native American studies major with a digital arts minor, Curley talks in this video about learning weaving from his grandmother, his culture, and the Hood's exhibit, which also includes a rug woven by his late grandmother, Helen Curley.

Featured Student Story: Sara Remsen '12

During my junior summer, I worked as the animation intern for the Charles Hayden Planetarium at the Boston Museum of Science in Boston, MA. Before taking the internship, I had taken 3D Digital Modeling, Computer Animation, and Motion Study and decided to be a Digital Arts minor. I am also a Biology major and plan to pursue a career in science visualization. My experience as an animation intern taught me about the 3D animation industry and opened even more doors for me.

Unlike most museums around the country, the Boston Museum of Science contains a small, in-house animation studio to produce its own planetarium films. I was lucky enough to be able to work with and learn from each of the animators, developing skills in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe AfterEffects and learning Maya tips and tricks. I also had the opportunity to learn dynamics and particle systems. However, the most valuable skill that I learned was how to put everything together. I learned how to be part of a production team, how to work in a pipeline, and how to develop my own workflow. I composited images from multiple render passes in Photoshop, manipulate animation in AfterEffects, and I found the niche where all my skills fit together.

Stephanie Trudeau '09

Major: Computer Science, minor in Digital Arts
Current Job: Software Engineer at Integrity Applications Incorporated (IAI)
Current Location: Carlsbad, CA
Favorite Animation: Toy Story
Digital arts experience since graduating: I am currently working at a company that has several contracts doing image and video processing work. Some of our projects process satellite imagery as well as images and videos from military systems. I know that the Dartmouth Digital Arts program doesn't really teach much about this type of work, but image compression, encoding, decoding, and other processing techniques are within the realm of computer graphics and are great skills to know about. I am also currently working on a Master's at USC where I am learning many of these skills as well.

Major: History modified with Economics (focus on postcolonialism and development)
Current Job: Dartmouth undergrad (took gap year)
Current Location: Hanover
Arts experience outside of classes: Working on two documentary films, cooperating on one of them with a traditional (2D) animator - it's a film about the impact of volunteering and 'idealism' on the Marshall Islands in the Central Pacific, using an animation based on a traditional Marshallese legend to raise questions about issues related to "loss" of culture, cultural imperialism, etc. Also working on an extensive black and white photography project, not much digital stuff there though.

Colin Treseler '09

Reflection: Having a background in digital arts has been immensely important to my career thus far. Being able to speak intelligently in the tech world (where I work) is very important. The digital arts track got me hooked on CS and it’s been all uphill since!

Justin Slick '09

Favorite 3D Feature: Ratatouille
Favorite 2D Feature: Aladdin
Favorite Animated Short: Day & Night
Favorite Algorithm: Not sure whether it's an algorithm specifically, but the 1996 SIGGRAPH paper by Krishnamurthy and Levoy that eventually led to Normal Mapping; the games industry as we know it couldn't function without the techniques they pioneered and ZBrush wouldn't be half the application that it is today.
Digital arts experience since graduation: I haven't worked in the computer graphics industry directly, but I'm a writer for About.com in charge of the beginner oriented "3D Guidesite" at 3d.about.com.
