Meridian Retrospective
Evolution of Meridian
Meridian is a space-combat-themed turn-based tactics game. Fleets on both sides maneuver around a hex grid board attempting to get an advantageous position. It is designed to harbor significant strategic depth in a small scale scenario.
Meridian is about pressure. It's about pushing down on the battle lines, trying to control the enemy's movements, pushing them into a tighter and tighter space while they push back. Think of an evenly matched arm-wrestling competition. Both sides will appear to be very close, fighting to push past the front of battle, until one side runs out of strength and breaks. That's the feeling I'm going for, especially in the game's larger scale.

Both sides have limited sources of reinforcements, which will produce a constant stream of ships. However, some of this long-term building capacity can be traded for the immediate production of a small number of ships.
Since larger fleets have increasing advantages in battle, a player who is running behind in total number of ships may choose to sacrifice his or her long-term reinforcement pool in exchange for an immediate advantage. After that, the player must act quickly to avoid falling into a permanent disadvantage.
