Robert Barto specialized in historical lute performance at the University of California, San Diego, and went on to continue his studies in Europe. In 1984 he was awarded top prizes at both the International Lute Competition in Toronto and the Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges. In addition to performing throughout Europe and America, he has recorded five critically-acclaimed volumes of Weiss for Naxos, as well as two CDs of Hagen’s solo works.
