Lute Festival 2004 Classes
Daniel Larson:  Accelerated Lute Building

Anticipation.  On the first day of class, participants get set to construct a lute in the Euclidean geometry sense of the word, on paper with pencil, ruler and compass.

Tools.  Having the right ones close at hand is essential for working efficiently.  Daniel wears this set around his waist every day in the shop.

Clamping.  A critical function for making solid and lasting glue joints, it can be accomplished elegantly by the use of a rigid frame and go-bars.  For many lute designs all the barring can be glued on in a single pass by this approach.  Note that the photo shows a dry mock-up to demonstrate the technique for the class – normally the soundboard would be cut to shape and planed to thickness, the rose would be cut out, and the bars would be profiled before gluing them on.
