Lute Festival 2004 Performers
Duo Marchand

Duo Marchand takes its name from a family of court musicians that flourished in 17th-century France. In April of 2003 the Duo was heard in its first national broadcast over Sirius Satellite Radio:  a program of Shakespeare songs honoring the bard's birthday. Earlier in 2004, the Duo appeared on the CityMusic Series in Columbus and at the Yale Center for British Art.  Other recent credits include The Cloisters in upper Manhattan; the Hudson Opera House and Cold Spring, both in upstate New York; the Yale University Collection of Musical Instruments; the Great Falls (Virginia) Chamber Music Series; and Washington DC's historic downtown Church of the Epiphany.  The Duo also made a seies of appearances at the New York Botanical Gardens as a special feature of the exhibit "The New Renaissance Garden."  During the 2004-2005 season, Andy and Marcia are happy to return to Washington DC under the auspices of the Beethoven Society, which presents concerts at the German Embassy.

Soprano and historical harper Marcia Young is a regular member of My Lord Chamberlain's Consort as well as the medieval trio Trefoil, which has toured widely since its founding in 2000.  Both groups released first recordings in 2003.  Last season she was heard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Trefoil and again with the viol consort Parthenia; earlier in 2003 she was in Washington DC with Trefoil and the Folger Consort.  In July of 2003 she taught vocal and instrumental classes at the San Francisco Early Music Society Medieval and Renaissance Workshop in San Rafael. During the season, she serves as adjunct faculty at Manhattan's Yeshiva University.  Engagements during the 2004-2005 season include concerts in New York, Providence and Washington DC in addition to a pair of joint performances with Piffaro in Philadelphia.

Andy Rutherford, a native of upstate New York, began studying the lute in connection with his interest in 17th-century art, especially the paintings of Caravaggio and Vermeer, which often feature the instrument.  A regular member of My Lord Chamberlain's Consort, Mr. Rutherford has also appeared at Tanglewood and Lincoln Center with the Mark Morris Dance Group.  Other recent credits include performances sith New York's Ensemble for Early Music, Parthenia, Musica Antiqua of New York, The New York Cosort of Viols, Chacona, Voices of Ascension, and the Big Apple Baroque Band. Internationally recognized as a builder of lute-family instruments, Mr. Rutherford taught and lectured on the history of lute design and construction at the Lute Society of America Seminar in 2000.
