Lute Festival 2006 Classes
Crawford Young:  Medieval & Early Renaissance Lute Intabulation Workshop

Crawford Young’s class filled up the stage of Harkness Chapel each morning.

One of the pieces chosen for study was Ile fantasies de
Joskin.
“When intabulating, if you have to make a choice, stick to
the tenor part. The contratenor is the first to omit or modify if it is
not possible to cover all the parts.”

“Finger playing may be OK for the repertory of the late 15th century.” He
sometimes mixes fingers with quill playing. In that case he does recommend
using nails to match the tone colors as closely as possible.

“Hold the feather with the back fingers to ease shifting the thumb
and forefinger on the shaft to modulate the stiffness.”
