Duo Marchand takes its name from a family of court musicians that flourished in 17th-century France. In recent seasons the Duo has performed on The Cloisters Uptown Treasures series; CityMusic in Columbus (OH); the Great Falls (VA) Chamber Music Series; The Hudson (NY) Opera House; The Chapel of Our Lady Restoration in Cold Spring (NY); the Yale University Collection of Musical Instruments; and the Yale Center for British Art. The Duo also played a series of concerts at the New York Botanical Gardens, as a special feature of the exhibit The New Renaissance Garden. Duo Marchand’s 2005-06 season included a series of concerts under the auspices of the New York Public Library exhibition of illuminated manuscripts, The Splendor of the Word. In April the Duo returned to Washington D.C.’s historic downtown Church of the Epiphany with its program of Shakespeare songs, in honor of the Bards birthday. This program has been broadcast nationwide over Sirius Satellite Radio. On 15 October 2006 look for Duo Marchand in concert at The Cloisters Soprano and historical harper Marcia Young is a regular member of My Lord Chamberlains Consort as well as the medieval trio Trefoil, which has toured widely since its founding in 2000. Both groups released first recordings in 2003. Recent highlights included joint performances with Piffaro, the Newberry and Folger Consorts, and a solo recital, “Ancient Airs,” presented by the Musical Instrument Collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Young has taught vocal and instrumental classes at the San Francisco Early Music Society’s Medieval and Renaissance Workshop. During the academic year, she serves as Director of Performance Studies at Manhattan’s Stern College, Yeshiva University. Also a music journalist, Young writes regularly for Playbill and serves as an announcer for the classical channels of Sirius Satellite Radio. Andy Rutherford, a native of upstate New York, began studying the lute in connection with his interest in 17th-century art, especially the paintings of Caravaggio and Vermeer, which often feature the instrument. A regular member of My Lord Chamberlain's Consort, Mr. Rutherford has also appeared at Tanglewood and Lincoln Center with the Mark Morris Dance Group, at the Connecticut Early Music Festival, and on the Temple of Dendur series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He performs regularly with such ensembles as New York's Ensemble for Early Music, Parthenia, Musica Antiqua of New York, The New York Cosort of Viols, Chacona, and the Big Apple Baroque Band. Internationally recognized as a builder of lute-family instruments, Mr. Rutherford taught and lectured on the history of lute design and construction at the Lute Society of America Seminar in 2000. |
