“Desperate Housewives of Shakespeare’s England”

This summer, the Lute Society of America and the Amherst Early Music Festival join forces to present a “hands-on” exploration of music making in England and Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Headlining the 2009 LSA faculty will be Grammy-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane.  Ronn will explore English lute music and music from the English “broken consort” repertoire.  Lute ensemble guru and ace intabulator Doug Freundlich will coach the ensembles for the Lute Song Cabaret (see below).  LSA Program Director Phil Rukavina, will offer a survey of the music and other important sources focused on the Spanish vihuela da mano

The great flowering of the English lute song provides us with nearly thirty printed books of songs for solo voice and multiple voices in dialogue or ensemble, by more than twenty different composers.  Many of these songs positively cry out for dramatic treatment. The Lute Song Cabaret titled Desperate Housewives of Shakespeare’s England and directed by lutenist Grant Herreid will present settings of works by Dowland, Campion, Jones, Ferrabosco and others, in touching and delightful vignettes of life and love in the age of Shakespeare.  Singers will deliver their poignant tales accompanied by combinations of lute ensembles and mixed consorts.

All are welcome...bring a friend!
