The requirements for Math 98 (and the basis of student grades) are as follows: (1) Course Notes (25%) At the end of the course everyone will turn in their notes for a quick evaluation. They should be neat and complete! (2) Weekly Course Diary (25%) Each week you will turn in a "diary". This should contain a semi non-technical description of what you have learned over the previous week. You should write this as if you were keeping up a running dialogue with a friend, who is not necessarily a math major, of what you are learning in Math 98. (This means that you can assume that your friend is reading this each week.) This is a real writing assignment and should be as long as you need in order to say what you want to say clearly. (3) Problem sets (25%) There will be semi-regular problem sets, about once a week. (4) Final Project (25%) The subject of Information Theory (including coding theory and communication theory) is a highly active research area. Beyond the intrinsic subject matter, the field has also been applied in many disciplines, including biology, music, psychology, computer science economics and engineering. You will each do a final project, in which you can analyze a particular result or application. You will write it up and give a short presentation.
