The SISMAT Program offers Secure Information
Systems Mentoring and Training to students and their partner
professors from small colleges in the American northeast. SISMAT
combines intense hands-on training, a paid internship, and independent
research support for students who will be college juniors or seniors
during the 2009-2010 school year.
Why SISMAT?
Information security experts in a variety of business,
government, and non-profit sectors lament that they have a hard time
hiring new employees; in particular, it's difficult to find recent
college graduaates with the necessary cybersecurity skills and
experience. Unfortunately, the majority of small colleges cannot offer
their students the hands-on training or prolonged study in secure
systems that would meet this critical, growing need. SISMAT aims to
fill this gap and help students get the training they need; in other
words, we provide the tools necessary for you to get a job as a
security expert after graduation.
The Program for Students
There are three program components for SISMAT student
participants:
Training: You will spend two weeks in residence at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH for a fun and
intensive training course.
- Industry and academic experts you will teach you about
cryptography, PKI, network security, and other topics.
- You will immediately apply this information by experimenting with
real-world programs and toolsets.
- Room and board in Hanover are provided free of charge, and travel expenses within the northeast are
reimbursable.
- As a SISMAT student you will also receive a number of
reference books that will be useful throughout the program and beyond.
- Finally, we are also planning a few social activities to distract and
relax you.
Internship: SISMAT students will be matched
with paid internship in computer security at a commercial,
governmental, or non-profit organization for the summer of
2009. SISMAT organizers are currently working with internship sponsors
in these domains to identify positions and projects for accepted
students. We encourage students who already have a security internship
for this period to contact their supervisor to see if he or she is
interested in working with SISMAT organizers to make sure you get the
training you need before you start, and that the internship itself is
a successful one. Note: While we can help you figure out the
logistics of living away from home, students are responsible for
finding and paying for room and board at their internship locations.
Independent study: With the support of SISMAT
organizers and colleagues, each student and partner professor will
design and implement an independent study or research project at their
home academic institution
