Summer 2001 Road Trip

I climbed at the following areas in my summer long road trip:

  • Maple Canyon, Utah
  • City of Rock Idaho
  • Clear Lake, Wind River Range, Wyoming
  • Logan Canyon, Utah
  • Big Cottonwood Canyon. Utah

Maple Canyon

Maple Canyon is a sport climbing area two hours south east of Salt Lake City. It is a great warm weather destination because there are always walls in the shade.

A view of  the ridges leading into Maple canyon and the dirt road and group campsite at the bottom of the canyon. Notice the cobbles on the left wall.
Maple Canyon does have a lot of maple trees in the main canyon but the side forks have a mixture of trees.

The rock at Maple Canyon is conglomerate sedimentary rock with cobbles embedded in a matrix of soft sandstone. Most of the cobles are quartzite. I describe it to Boston climbers as Hammond Pond on steroids.

I like the place so much I went three three times. The following pictures are from of August 10th to 12th.

Clear Lake

Clear Lake is the Wind River range in Wyoming. Access is via a flat (500 meter elevation gain) 8 mile long horse trail from Big Sandy Opening.. It took us around four hours to hike at a leisurely pace. The dirt road into Big Sandy was in worst shape than the trail.

Our objective was the nine pitch classic Minor Dihedral on Haystack. This is a view of Haystack from Big Sandy Lake. The climb ascends the right side of the shield on the left end.

A closer view Haystack from the south. Minor Dihedral goes up the right skyline.

The climb is here some where.

high right facing corner in front of him..

The next day we would have
been stuck in this noon time
thunderstorm.

Finishing up on Cario (5.11a).
