Professional book in upright folio format.Lumsdencited several factors that should have led him to date the bookc1610, but he followed his impressions rather than the available evidence. The owner of the book is almost certainly the 'C.K.' who appears frequently at the end of pieces otherwise known to be by a differentcomposer. We know from Henry Sampson's version of 'Mrs White's Choice' that writingone's owndivisions was considered sufficient reason to place one's name at the endof a piece. Diana Poulton notes that the scribe exhibits a certain 'independence of mind', [7] as he preferred his own divisions to those already composed, alsosupporting the probability that this player was not an amateur. The binding is of atype found as late as 1617, and the presence of 'Mrs Anne Greene her leaves begreen' with its idiosyncratic tuning in an otherwise entirely v.t. source links the book inextricably with Danyel 1606.

Some folios are missing from thebeginning, and the foliation begins at f.2, presumably because of the missingsheets.

The bookplate inside the front cover bearing the motto SubRobore Virtus belonged to Frederick William Cosens, of The Shelleys, Lewes, who almost certainly owned the book beforeit was known to have been sold in 1866. It was presented to Cambridge University Library in 1891 by Francis Jenkinson, the librarian. The Manuscript was lot 174 in a sale of Puttick and Simpson on 2 March1866, andwas bought by Bernard Quaritch Ltd, who have no records of its subsequentbuyer.Jenkinson may have bought the book from Quaritch at this time, but itseems unlikely that he was the only owner for the 25 years between the Puttick and Simpson sale, and his donation of the manuscript to Cambridge University Library. The combination of the names of Francis Jenkinson andF W Cosens written on the bookplate may have led Lumsden to the name FrancisCozens,an error which has been perpetuated for some years.
