Traveling to Hanover

By air

There are several options, and the best choice depends on connectivity to your origin and your personal preferences.

  • Boston, MA (BOS) is the furthest away (2.5-hour drive) but has the most connectivity, especially overseas. Despite its distance it is often the most convenient because you can take the Dartmouth Coach door-to-door from the airport to the center of campus, right next to the Hanover Inn, two blocks from the Six South Street Hotel. The Coach is very comfortable, runs every two hours, is very reliable, and has in-seat power and on-board Wi-Fi. This is the easiest option.

  • Manchester, NH (MHT) is an easy drive (75 minutes, all interstate) with service from major airlines. You'll need to rent a car.

  • Burlington, VT (BTV) is an easy drive (90 minutes, all interstate) with service from major airlines. A bit smaller than Manchester with fewer flights. You'll need to rent a car.

  • Lebanon, NH (LEB) is the closest (15-minute drive and cab service is available on request) but with very small planes and very few flights. Cape Air offers scheduled flights to and from Boston's Logan Airport and Westchester County Airport in White Plains, NY; for the latter they offer van connections to downtown New York City. This is the fastest way to reach Hanover from New York, and (with the right connections in Boston) the fastest route to and from Washington, DC. That said, these small planes are more susceptible to winter-weather cancellation and, with so few flights daily, there are few alternatives to a cancelled flight. I do not recommend this option for first-time visitors or nervous flyers.

    By car

    From Boston area (~2.5 hours), or Manchester Airport (1.5 hours): Take I-93 north to I-89 North. Just past Lebanon, NH, you cross into Vermont and exit onto I-91 north. See following description.

    From Burlington, VT, Airport (1.5 hours): Take I-89 south to I-91 north just before you hit NH. See following description.

    From western Massachussetts and Connecticut area: Take I-91 north and exit at Norwich/Hanover (exit 13), and turn east toward Hanover. Cross the Connecticut river. Turn left at the first traffic light. ECSC underground parking is the first right; for surface parking, keep going. See PARKING below.

    Visitor parking

    Free option: Follow Thayer Drive past the ECSC parking garage and watch for a parking lot on the left. Call 603-646-2340 (parking services), say you are a visitor to Computer Science, and give your license plate state/number.

    Two fee-based options:

    1. the parking garage underneath ECSC - enter/leave with a credit card. Access from "Thayer Drive", a short, steep road from the traffic light near the bottom of West Wheelock (between all the construction, opposite West Street). If needed, handicap spaces are immediately inside (same level). Take the elevator from there. This is the easiest option.
    2. surface spaces: in front of Cummings Hall, in the cul-de-sac at the end of Tuck Mall. (Tuck Mall is accessed from North Main Street). Three handicap spaces (no charge) are next to ~four ParkMobile spaces (pay with ParkMobile app). From there, walk right (past Cummings Hall, past Maclean Hall) to the Class of 1982 Engineering and Computer Science Center (ECSC).
