ABOUT ME

I am an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Simon Fraser University and I direct the XDiscovery Lab. I also hold an adjunct appointment as Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College.

My research in human-computer interaction (HCI) investigates future interactive systems and brings interactivity to everyday objects. In particular, my work focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of novel interactive systems for smart everyday “things”, ranging from watches to garments, accessories, appliances, and furniture. Aside from contributing new systems and knowledge to the field, I use the experiences from my own research to inform the investigation of prototyping tools to enable broader participation of research activities in my field for people without a strong background in electronics, sensors, or actuators. Besides my current research program, I am developing a new research agenda to investigate assistive systems to facilitate information tasks and STEAM education for people with visual impairments.

At SFU, I am currently building a new lab and I am seeking well-motivated and hard-working Ph.D. students, M.Sc. students, and undergrad interns to work with me on exciting HCI research projects. If you are interested, please email me a recent copy of your CV and transcript.

I welcome students with hardware background to apply!

Ph.D. applicants are highly encouraged to participate in an internship with me before applying for our Ph.D. program.
